ReplyDeleteFinally the boy passes past a table leg of the piano and transforms into a boy wearing modern clothing. The boy then sits next to the Pianist and they look at each other. The way they look at each other suggests that the new boy is the Pianists son. The boy then ends the song by pressing the key, both the boy and the Pianist are happy and smiling. This part of the animation suggests the start of new life and carrying on.
ReplyDeleteIn conclusion I believe the animation is the represents many things, but most of all it represents life in ever form, the start of new life, the afterlife (Heaven/Hell(although hell is not suggested anywhere in this animation, except for in the war scene as many people describe war as 'like hell')) and memories of life. The animation gives a overall effect of happiness for me as it shows the promise of life after death and the 'Circle of Life' (yes, it is a Lion King quote) how life continues with the new generation. A note on the actually quality of the animation. It was amazing! One of the best short animations I've ever seen!
I have many interpretations lined up in my head about this animation, but firstly I would like to say that the theme of this animation is that of memories, life and life after death.
ReplyDeleteThe animation starts with the elderly figure of the animation playing a classical song on the piano, but I would like to point out that there is light shining from above onto the piano and Pianist. Some may think this light was put there so that the elderly Pianist would stand out, but I on the other hand do not. This is because the animator could have made the Pianist stand out in so many other ways such as just illuminating the piano itself. Therefore this means the light has a significance or meaning. I think the light signifies a presence or blessing upon the Pianist, possibly God. The elderly Pianist then continues to play his music when a ghost like figure appears by the side of the Pianist. This ghostly figure is also elderly and has a expression of peace. We can assume that the ghostly figure is the former wife of the Pianist as she kisses him on the cheek. The Pianist seem then lifts his head back up with and expression of happiness as soul of his wife seems to fade away. I have interpreted this part of the animation in two ways. The ghost the Pianist's wife could in fact be the memory of her living on inside the Pianist's heart and mind. This part of the story could also show the existence of a life after death, which as the bible teaches, this is a reality.
After this A medical helmet appears on the Pianist head. He then looks to the left of the screen to see his former self in a soldiers uniform with the same medical helmet on. We also see a soldier with him (his former self), he seems to give a silent order for the soldier to shoot, only for the soldier to be shot down. The younger Pianist holds the soldier in his arms as he dies. He then looks to top of the screen as the camera Peds upwards. This can be interpreted to ways, he could be looking upwards as he cannot bear to meet the dead soldiers eyes, he could not save him. Or he could be looking upwards as he knows where the soldiers going, his life on earth has ended, he is travelling to the afterlife, he is travelling upwards towards Heaven. The Pianist is then seen giving a present to a small boy, he is wearing old clothing, most probably dating early 20th century. The toy is a wooden horse, the boy then uses the horse. Assuming the war the Pianist was in was world war 2, then the boy could be the pianist himself, another memory of the life he has had.
I'm really glad you wrote this, Lewis, I really enjoyed reaidng it. Despite there being no competition from other members, you're still a winner. This was great! Well worth the 40 points!
ReplyDeleteI looked at the film first then Lewis's comments. I thought he got it just right. Memories! Probably of wife, friend dying, his childhood. I wonder if the young boy at the piano is his grandson.
ReplyDeleteVery good.
:D thanks! I meant to say that the young modern boy could be his grandson, but I typoed, loool.
ReplyDeleteI think the last bit is when the pianist is given a wooden horse when he was a child but when the person riding it changes clothes it actually becomes his grandson who the pianist has later given his horse to and then joins him at the piano
