Thiery's Testimony

Thiery was baptised on Sunday at the Uxbridge Road Tabernacle, his home church. Baptism doesn't save a person, it is just the way God gave us to show that a person is openly committed to God. The water symbolises being washed of sin, and beginning a new life, a life lived for God's Glory.

A bunch of us from the Youth Club were grateful to have been there for the service. Thiery shared his testimony, the story of how He was saved and how he now has a relationship with Jesus his Saviour. For those who couldn't make it to the service, here is Thiery's testimony.

Talking to an All Powerful God [Acts 4 v23-31]

The disciples were held as prisoners and were threatened not to preach the name of Jesus. But they couldn't stay quiet about the Son of God. They continued to speak about Jesus despite the serious threats upon them and as soon as they were released, they prayed together.

Prayer is an awesome thing. We can speak to God freely, telling Him our concerns, worries and praise Him for his great power and goodness.

We can either believe that God is in control and live by that fact, or we must believe that there is no purpose in life but to live like robots, meaninglesly working our way through life for nothing in the end.

The disciples call Him Sovereign Lord. Sovereign means ALL Powerful and is in complete control. But we can still pray to Him and ask Him things. He is the creator who made everything and therefore knows everything. We are not freak accidents but we are here for a purpose that God has planned for.

The disciples proclaim that God has spoken, by His Hy Spirit, through men in history. All the things that have been spoken of by Godly inspired men have happened. Therefore we know that what the Bible says about the future will also happen. These are things that demand our attention.

They then say that the death of Jesus was all in Gods plan... God had already decided it should happen, long before. Despite Gods plans, we are still accountable for our actions. God knows our actions before we do them and can use them for His purposes... even the terrible things that people do can be used for good by God. We are accountable before God for all the things that we do.

Did God answer their prayer?

Yes. God gave them His Holy Spirit and gave them power to speak boldly for Him. God changes lives and situations by His Holy Spirit. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things through the Power of God.

God wants us to speak to Him.

Youthclub

As well as providing a safe, friendly and fun environment for young teens to spend a Friday evening, at Youth Club we share the valuable life lessons taught by The Bible.

Entry Fee: 50p

The evening begins at 7:30pm with a short lesson brought to the teens by an experienced member of the church leadership. There is time for open questions and discussion after each lesson.

From 8:00 - 9:00pm is games time when the teens are free to play board games, pool, table tennis, badminton, team games including volleyball, indoor hockey, handball and football. There is also a cooking lesson each week where the teens have opportunity to make treats for the rest of the Youth Club to enjoy later in the evening. During this hour we often small projects set involving craft and creativity for the teens to enjoy. Points are awarded for participation, completion and winning different activities. Prizes for the highest point scorers are awarded at the end of each term.

From 9:00 until we close at 10:00pm we all come together to watch a section of a movie which we cover over several weeks. Popcorn, soft drinks and the treats made by the teens are free to enjoy during the movie. After watching the section of movie, we have a quiz about the movie for which we also award points. These quiz times often turn into interesting discussions as we cover relevant issues brought up in the movie.

Award Points
Points are awarded for participation, contribution and excelling. Each member collects points throughout a term. At the end of each term we organise a trip or activity for the 4 members who've collected the most points. These trips have included an evening at a golf driving range, pizza & bowling, trips into London for shows or other attractions, and a trip to Thorpe Park to which we invited some older members that hadn't attended Youth Club for a while, in order to strengthen and continue friendships. Here's a memory of the Thorpe Park trip:

The Church [Acts 2 v42]

What was the first church like?

The first church was a group of over 3000 people. They met at homes and in the synagogue. It's important to realise that the church was a group of Jewish Christians from all over the known world that met in various places.

  • They listened to the Apostles (the founders of the church) teaching about the Bible and who Jesus was and what He had done.
  • They also devoted themselves to fellowship; friendship and looking after each other.
  • They celebrated the death and ressurection of Jesus.
  • They praised God in prayer and singing.
  • They showed kindness and shared their posessions with any who had need.
  • They enjoyed the reputation they were building with those around them.
  • They witnessed to those around them, telling them about Jesus and te Bible.

Where has today's church gone wrong?

Today churhes can be places of tradition and empty ceremony or enjoyed as entertainment for the music and social occasion. Church leaders can often take up political roles. None of these things were mentioned in the first church. Many people today go to church because they believe it's earning them heaven, or to be christened, married or for funerals. As humans we have taken something good that God has given us and misused it.

What should our church be like now?

Our church should be as the first church was... a mixture of people from different ages, locations, race and even religious backgrounds. It should be centred around fellowship, friendship, scripture reading and teaching, praising God.

Youth Club is like the first church. We care for eachother and fellowship with eachother. We read and learn from the Bible. The main focus to bring each other the knowledge of the love of Jesus.

Youth Club is church!

Richard Nornoo [Testimony]

This Friday, we had the privilege of Richard's company throughout the evening and then to hear him tell the story of how God changed his life.

Richard's wife, Harriet, has brought their children to Little Fishes (our church's parent/toddler group) and I met Richard for the first time, 2 weeks ago, at the Little Fishes 10th Birthday party. After chatting to Richard for just a short time, I knew I had to invite him to youthclub so he could share his story with you.

If you weren't there or would like to see it again, just click the picture to watch the video.

Peter Preaches [Acts 2]

Have you ever had to give a presentation? It's not easy to speak to a crowd. Peter wasn't very well educated. He was just a fisherman who was unsure of himself enough to deny Jesus in front of people around him when put under pressure. Now here he is standing and speaking in front of thousands of people. What was the reason? God had given the Holy Spirit to his disciples and given them a new start.

What does he tell the people about Jesus now? He told of Jesus miracles and proof that Jesus was the Son of God, and reminded them that they had killed Him. Peter also proclaimed that God raised Him from the dead, proving He was the Son of God as promised by God in the early scriptures of the Bible. Jesus has carried out perfectly what God had sent Him to do and now He sits at Gods right hand in a position of power and authority. He sent the Holy Spirit to continue His work in our hearts.

This was Gods purpose and plan since he beginning. God is sovereign and in control, yet those evil men who killed Jesus were all part of what happened. How can this be? Did they take credit for being part of Gods plan? Of course not! They were cut to the heart with guilt. They realise they were being held responsible for putting the Son of God to death. They didn't argue or shift the blame, they knew they had killed Gods Son... The very Messiah they were looking for since the Bible began.

Do you ever feel guilty or do you shift the blame? The Holy Spirit is given to convince us of our sin so that we are cut to the heart with guilt. This is so that we turn to God and ask if there's a way to be forgiven. And there is! If we are sorry and turn from our sin, He is willing to forgive us, remove our guilt and change our hearts. The Holy Spirit can make us new people from the inside out.

Peter pleads with the people to do something about their situation. It was an urgent plea, that each person would make themselves right with God. At this time, 3000 of those who had wanted Jesus dead were saved and being baptised.

We didn't crucify Jesus, but if we reject or despise Him, it's just as bas as if we had.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit
Acts 2 v1-21

Jesus has done many amzing things and this is one of the most amazing.
Above all miracles, here we read of Jesus sending His Holy Spirit to
His disciples. A sound of rushing wind and what looked like tongues of
fire caught the peoples attention, but nt as much as the facts that
suddenly they heard the unlearned disciples all speaking in differet
languages so that everyone could understand them. Jesus was in them
but no one could see Him, they could only see andxperience the effect.

The huge croud around numbered more than 3,000. They were bewildered
and didn't really understad what was happening. Peter stood up in
front of these thousands of people now, despite denying Jesus not long
before, and taught about the salvation Jesus offered. The Holy Spirit
is powerful enough to cause men and women to want to spread the good
news of Jesus at any cost. Without the Holy Spirit there isn't this
power. The Holy Spirit changes and empowers ordinary people.

Jesus sends His Holy Spirit and we must accept the Holy Spirit if we
want to live the life God wants of us. The same Jesus and the same
Holy Spirit has given new birth to people all over the world. Men and
women all over the world have the Holy Spirit working in them and are
part of the same miracle.

You must go to Jesus as the only way, the only One who is good,
because you realise you're not good.

The Ascension [Acts 1 v1-11]

Here is the big event of Jesus ascending into Heaven. It would have been an amazing sight, but the important thing is not how, but why He went up into Heaven.

Jesus had proven He was God on earth and His work was complete. He is now interceding with God on our behalf. God is Holy, without sin, pure. Nothing that is stained by sin can come into the presence of God. We can't talk to Him, we can't pray to Him and ultimately we can't enter Heaven.

When someone wrongs us we think it's fair to expect to be compensated for at least the damages done. That would be fair. So, what about our wrong against God? How do we compensate for our wrong, our sinfulness. Jesus is the only way. Jesus died in our place taking the punishment for our sin and can therefore go to God as forgiven in our place. Jesus talks to God for us because He is now our Holiness.

Jesus is now in Heaven preparing us a place in eternity if we are trusting on Jesus as the only way we can be Holy enough to enter Heaven.

Do You Love Me? [John 21]

Jesus didn't just appear to the 12 disciples, he also appeared to hundreds of others.

In this account Jesus appears to the disciples while they were fishing and then ate breakfast with them. During this time, Jesus singles Peter out. He asks Peter a question. "Do you truly love me more than these?" Meaning... is Peter's love for Jesus more than the friends around him or even his work. Are there things in our lives that fill our minds more than our thoughts and love for Jesus? Many things can come between us and our relationship with Jesus. Do we have a deep-seated intelligent love for Jesus?

Peter's life had been changed since he'd heard the teaching and ministry of Jesus. His life had been turned around. Peter knew Jesus was the Son of the Living God. He had given his life to Jesus, and Jesus was confirming Peters love by asking him this question. This question was very important to Peter because he had denied his allegiance to Jesus just days before. He had cracked under the pressure when he feared he may be crucified with Jesus, and pretended not to even know Jesus. Like this, we too can deny what we have learned from the Bible when our friends pressure us. We can become ashamed of the Bible and Jesus when under pressure from those around us.

Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Him. And each time asking him a different way. When Peter three times confirmed his love for Jesus, He told Peter to look after His sheep. These sheep being people who hear Jesus voice and follow Him. We are all like sheep going astray. We need Jesus to restore us and bring us back to Him, the great shepherd.

Jesus is asking us all the question "Do you really love me?"

Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead?

Either it's really true or some sort of vision, wishful thinking or dream.

Vision/Dream?
The disciples wanted to see Jesus again and maybe they dreamed or just imagined they saw him. Dreams seem real for the moment but they disappear. Visions only appear to one person at a time. Dreams and visions don't appear to 7 people at the same time. And does a vision speak or make a fire and cook food. The vision/dream explanation doesn't really hold up.

Invented Story?
If the disciples had invented Jesus resurrection, then they are the biggest liars in history. It's a very serious charge to bring against simple fishermen. They would have had to live under their continued lie without failure throughout the whole of their lives... even to death... without faltering. This too is very unlikely.

Is it true then?
There is no other real explanation. The evidence proves Jesus is the Son of God and did rise from the dead, that His sacrifice for sin worked. If he hadn't have risen from the dead His death would just have been a shame and an injustice, but He DID rise and HAS saved His people. It proves there is life after death and Jesus is our hope of Heaven.

If you want eternal life, you must believe it too. He is worth trusting. It's the best way of life and eternity.

He Chose To Save You! [Joy]

An elderly preacher visiting a church told the following story

“A father, his son, and his son’s friend, were sailing when a storm overturned their boat sweeping all three into the water. Grabbing a rescue line, in a split second the father had to make the most excruciating decision of his life - which boy to save and which to sacrifice. He knew his son had accepted Christ and his friend had not. Anguished, the father yelled, “l love you son” and threw the rope to his son’s friend. By the time he’d pulled the boy back to the boat his son had disappeared. The boy’s body was never recovered. The father knew his son would step into eternity with Jesus and couldn’t bear the thought of his friend facing eternity without Christ”.

At the end of the service a teenage boy approached the old preacher and said “ a nice story, but what father in his right mind would sacrifice his son’s life in the hopes that the other boy would become a Christian?” - “You’ve got the point”, the old preacher said, “it gives you tiny glimpse into what it must have been like for God to sacrifice his only Son for us. You see....I was that father, and your pastor was my son’s friend.”

Jack's Last Club...

Sadly, Youthclub said goodbye to Jack this week as he turns 18 during the Easter Break.

We had a lot of fun kicking your butt in volleyball, and other games ;-) , during the four or more years you were with us. We're all gonna miss you being around.

!Happy birthday!, don't forget what you learned, and stay in touch!

Jesus Risesfrom the Dead[Luke 24 v1-12 & v36-49]

Our culture is affected by relativism - no rights or wrongs, no absolutes - everyone does as thy see fit and end up having no purpose in life but to please themselves, then to die. You are growing up in society that teaches there are no real consequences or goal.

The Bible teaches exactly the opposite. The Bible teaches us that there is a purpose to life and then eternal life after death.

What we believe will effect where we end our lives and where we spend eternity.

The Christian faith isn't blind faith. Jesus was real and taught like no one else, but also died for us and then rose from the dead. He really was born, He really lived, He really died and He really did rise from the dead. History confirms it.

Jesus died and was buried in a rich mans tomb. The women were the first to see the empty tomb and the grave clothes laying empty. After the disciples too saw the empty tomb, it slowly dawned on them that He had actually risen. Jesus then began to appear to people in different places. He even ate with them and let them touch Him to see that He was really there.

Word spread quickly. While the disciples were still talking amongst themselves, He appeared to them and stood amongst them and spoke to them, "Peace be to you". They were so scared. Jesus came to bring peace. He calmed their fears and began to explain to them, showing them His wounds. They couldn't believe it for joy!

He reminded them of the Bible that they all knew so well, about the prophecies and how they had all been fulfilled in His death and resurrection. More than 300 prophecies from hundreds of years before were fulfilled in the life and death of Jesus. 65 of them were fulfilled in the 6 hours of Jesus crucifixion alone!

For example, 800 years before Jesus, Isaiah prophesied: Isaiah 53

Believing and seeing the truth of these things, is to come to faith in Jesus - coming to the point of saying "Jesus is my Lord and my Saviour and I need Him".

The Crucifixion[Luke 23 v26-56]

All the things that happened here were predicted hundreds of years before. King David wrote, 1000 years before, Psalm 22 v1, 16 & 18. Isaiah lived about 700 before the crucifixion and wrote Isaiah 53 v4, 9 & 12. It was all in the plan of God... every detail. This is also proof to us that the Bible is Gods Word. What it says, came to pass.

Some strange things happened at the time:

  • The sun stopped shining for three hours and the world went dark.
  • The curtain of the Temple, that seperated the people from the Holy Place, was torn in two from top to bottom.
  • Jesus cried out that He commit His spirit into the hands of God, and many who heard and saw this moment were saved.

Jesus died on the cross in the place of us who are sinners. God sent His Son to live as one of us and to take our punnishment. During the darkness, Jesus took upon Himself the darkness of our sin. Because Jesus was our substitute, we can be restored to God.

The two criminals crucified with Jesus reacted in different ways. One mocked Jesus, not seeing that Jesus was His only chance of salvation. The other criminal saw Jesus and believed and asked Jesus to remember him. This man was saved right at the end of his life. We don't know how much time we have on earth... Let us be like this criminal now and turn to Jesus as our saviour.

What happened on the cross really worked. Why continue life as if it didn't!

Jesus Condemned[Luke 22 v66]

Fairness matters a lot to us all, we hate to be treated unfairly.

Here we see an outrageous miscarriage of justice. Jesus told them great truths but the people were so prejudiced that they just wouldn't hear. They insulted him Terribley, but if they would have listened to what He was saying, their lives would have been changed amazingly. They were unable to find any fault with Him, they knew His teaching had accomplished great things, but their minds were prejudiced. They didn't want to listen, didn't want to hear. They didn't want to know. Let's make sure we don't shut our minds to what Jesus tells us like these people did.

They got up at dawn to put Jesus on trial. They accused Him of things that were not just untrue, but were exactly the opposite to who Jesus really was. He is Christ, but He wasn't an earthly king and never claimed to be. He even explained this to Pilate. But, despite His gentleness and kindness these people blindly hated Him.

Pilate knew Jesus was innocent and the people knew it too but they wanted Jesus dead. So, concerned for his own reputation, Pilate is swayed by the crowd.

Jesus is then handed over to Herod and remains completely silent to Herod's questions. Herod had killed John the Baptist, a very dear friend of Jesus.

At this time, Herod and Pilate became friends. This is something we should notice: Enemies are often united in opposition to Christians.

Pilate decided he would have Jesus flogged and then freed, so that he didn't have to kill an innocent man and at the same time would please the crowd. But the people still wanted Jesus dead.

The crowd grew strong and won Pilate over. It looks like a terrible mistake, but it was all part of God's plan. God allowed this gross miscarriage of justice so that Jesus would be put to death as an innocent man and bear the punishment for our sin.

So the real criminal was freed and Jesus, an innocent man, took a criminals place. This is a picture for us. Like Barabus the criminal, we deserve to die but we, the guilty ones, go free and Jesus takes our place.

All we have to do is ask Jesus to take our place of punnishment.

Men's Breakfast [Jeremy Field]

After a great breakfast, as always, the 50 (or more) men who attended were blessed to hear Jeremy Field tell of how God has worked in his life.

Jeremy is currently studying to be a Vicar at Cambridge, for the Church of England.

He was born in the UK and his family moved to Washington US when he was just 6 months old, and then moved on to Mexico City in mid 80's. Jeremy was sent back to boarding school in the UK after his dad realised he wasn't doing well academically and basically spent the whole first year messing about having fun.

Jeremy hated boarding school. They were only allowed to write letters home once a week, and the letters were read by the headmaster before they were sent. It was like prison. At the age of 11, not long after writing a letter home telling his parents how much he hated the school, he was called into the headmaster's office and was told that his parents had been in a serious plane crash and died.

Life changed from that day on. He had to go back to boardig school and moved in with his uncle living on a Devon farm. at this time Jeremy sensed God was with him. He wasn't a regular church goer but at the memorial service he knew God was with him. Despite this feeling of the reality of God he missed the point of Christian faith. He knew God existed but didn't do anything about it.

He went on through boarding school but didn't associate with Christians even though he thought God was real. Life for Jeremy began to unravel, becoming lonely and pointless. He didn't want to do any job and missed interviews because he didn't see the point in it all.

He decided to travel and search for meaning in life. He went to India to teach English which he enjoyed and the went to the Himalayas. Jeremy got sick while in the mountains and, fearing this sickness may mean death, called on God with promises of faith if God would heal him. It seems God answered his prayer as he did recover, but after the healing it wasn't long before he forgot all about God again.

After becoming ill again Jeremy had to return to the UK. On his travels, he always carried a Gideon bible and could never throw it away, he kept it with him without really knowing why.

Soon After his return to the UK he got a job and settled down. It was now that he decided to look into the faith... was God real? Reluctantly, Jeremy undertook the Alpha Course (10 meetings where the Bible and Jesus are explained in detail). He hadn't cried at his parents death because he was always able to keep a stiff upper lip, but the moment he walked into the church for the Alpha Course he found himself welling up.

During the Alpha Course he started understand the Christian faith and about the possibility of a relationship with God through Jesus. He experienced again the feeling he had when he was 11 but now he understood what it meant.

It's not just a warm feeling, in response to what God has done he wanted to go out into the world and make a difference. Jeremy decided to go into prisons and saw what a difference a relationship with God made to
these prisoners lives causing them to be a blessing to their families and society. Jeremy also started helping full time at Holy Trinity Brompton Church in London and began taking the Alpha Course to the military in Iraq and Afghanistan, taking resources to the field and running the Alpha Course from DVDs.

Jeremy said he could see more and more that God was opening doors to meet people who's lives were being changed. In Sierra Leone, the Civil war was evil, vicious and bloody. There were riots in the city. He saw the head of armed forces there who was a Christian and asked Jeremy for prayer because he feared things there would escalate and put the Jeremy and the others in danger, so they ran the course outside of town. The tension didn't explode as fear, believed to be and answer to their prayer and they were able to continue their work there.

Jeremy recalled an encouraging story of that time when a Christian was threatened in his home by a number of gunmen. Surprising himself, rather than obeying the gunmen, he told them "Come into my house, I want to tell you about Jesus". These men who wanted to kill him came in, ate with him and he even prayed for then all. They left his home and  they never touched him again. His confidence obviously came from years and years of a relationship with God.

Since the age of 11, Jeremy had struggled with forgiveness when it came to the pilot of his parents plane, who was clearly in error, causing the plane crash because he was trying to save money by landing the plane in dangerous circumstances instead of flying to a different airport. But something happened to show Jeremy that God is in control and hadn't forgotten what he was dealing with. It happened that Jeremy met someone, Washington, US, who was visiting the UK for a week and Cambridge for one day and walked into Jeremy's church. After hearing Jeremy's testimony, it turned out this visitor had lost his parents in the same plane accident. It was clearly not just chance. God is at work. God is creating relationships.

Jeremy finished by urging us all to "investigate God or even ask of God himself now".

The Night of Jesus' Arrest [Luke 22 v39-46]

Temptation
Jesus disciples were going to be tempted and tested at this time when Jesus was going to be put to death. Jesus had come to die as a sacrifice for sin. He knew this right through His life and He knew the time had come. Now was the night before. He prays and He tells His disciples to pray. He needs their support and encouragement. He is going to suffer for us, despite His own perfect life. He asks His Father if there's any other way, but that He was prepared to go through with it if it was His Fathers will. The sign of His distress is His sweat like blood.

Even though Jesus was in such anguish, His disciples fell asleep.

Betrayal
For money, Judas was willing to hand Jesus over to be killed. He brought a mob of soldiers, priests and rulers with weapons. They came as if Jesus was leading a rebellion even though Jesus was having a peaceful time with His disciples and wasn't about to cause any trouble. Judas was shown to be a false disciple. Peter struck out but Jesus stopped Him. He wanted to go in peace. At this point the disciples run away and Jesus is lead off by the mob.

Denial
Peter follows at distance. He's sitting nearby while the trial is taking place. Three times people pick him out as a disciple, but he denies it strongly each time. People recognize him as a follower of Jesus and even though Jesus warned him about this moment when satan would tempt him, he still wasn't prepared and fails the test. Jesus looks directly at him with forgiveness and Peter leaves and weep with remorse. There is encouragement here because later on Peter would be restored and would go on to stand firmly for Jesus and paid the price.

Sadly, with Judas, there was no sense of sorrow or forgiveness, and he ended his own life.

Are you just pretending to have an interest in Christ or are you standing firm in Jesus.

The Last Supper[Luke 22 v7-23]

The history of the Passover feast is that the Israelites were slaves to the Egyptians. On the night of the Passover, God rescued the Israelites by taking the life of the firstborn of every family who hadn't painted their doorpost with lambs blood as God had commanded the Israelites to do in faith. The Angel of Death passed over the Israelite homes but not a single family of the Egyptians was left untouched.

The lamb's blood represented Jesus' blood. As the Israelites were saved by the death of the lamb, all who believe on Jesus' death in their place are saved. The Jews celebrate the passover because it was their salvation, but we now celebrate Jesus death as our salvation. Instead of the passover, Jesus gave us "the Lord's supper" or "Communion".

Jesus gave bread and wine to His disciples as a new remembrance to take the place of the Passover feast. The bread and the wine are just symbols to help us to remember what Jesus has done for us. The bread and wine do not literally become Jesus body and blood, they are just a reminder for us.

Only true believers will celebrate the Lords Supper because only they can truly remember and thank God for their salvation. Eating the bread and drinking the wine does not change anyone who takes part, it will not save us or make us right with God. It is just a remembrance of Jesus broken body and spilled blood on the cross.

If we are not trusting in Jesus, our punishment is still due to us and we will have to die as He did and face the punnishment He faced when He died on the cross.

What's your excuse for not taking Jesus up on His offer?

Pale Knight [by Veronica]

What dwelling place is this, pale knight?
What secrets tarry behind the walls,
where rough hewn stones enslave men's souls
and shadows haunt within the halls?

These broken battlements of shame
stood timeless deep within the glen -
a foreboding looms you cannot name,
a wretched dread you cannot ken.

For sure you know this place is cursed
with blood of innocents is stained
and ravaged time has played foul nurse
and shunned the fallen with the slain.

What dwelling place is this, pale knight?
What secrets tarry behind the walls,
where rough hewn stones enslave men's souls
and shadows dwell within the halls?

A lady fair here once did dwell
left widowed by her brother's sword,
cruel enemy with roots in hell,
and severed her from liege and lord

The castle keep was sieged by red;
the courtyard strewn with bodies torn.
Her tender babes slayed in their beds,
left dreams of waifs for her to mourn

What dwelling place is this, pale knight?
What secrets tarry behind the walls,
where rough hewn stones enslave men's souls
and shadows dwell within the halls?

Her heart, that never supped from hate
sank deeply to the bottom dross
and learned its meaning, harshest fate,
sweet darkness to assuage her loss.

She gathered nettles, bitter rue,
crushed Mistletoe with hemlock seed
those cankered herbs, a potent brew -
steeped brandywine with Bryony.

What dwelling place is this, pale knight?
What secrets tarry behind the walls,
where rough-hewn stones enslave men's souls
and shadows dwell within the halls?

She draped her bower all in rags -
worn tapestries and doublets frayed,
and dressed her agony in swags -
the fragile cloth of her dismay

And when the final thread was shorn,
she drained the poison, every mite
and pulled the drapes to blot the morn
and felt the fail of heaven's light.

And cursed be, her voice did ease
all who wander close to me
that they will know no final peace
and linger here eternally...

Jesus Enters Jerusalem [Luke 19 v28-48]

We remember certain days in history that had a profound effect on the world. This was a significant event. At this time thousands of people were celebrating the feast of the Passover. Jesus was making His way to Jerusalem for this reason, despite knowing that the Jewish leaders wanted to kill Him. They wouldn't do it at this time because of the Passover celebrations, but would carry out their plans when things quietened down. On this day the crowds acknowledged Jesus to be the Messiah and welcomed Him with praise. They assumed He would free them from the Roman Empire, but Jesus rode into the city peacefully on a donkey. He showed he wasn't there to physically free His people, but to give them peace and freedom with God in His spiritual Kingdom.

When Jesus saw the city, He was heart broken because He knew that they (like us) would be judged for their disbelief. They didn't see that Jesus could bring them peace.

The Jews are an example of mankind's hostility towards God. We don't want God to rule over us, we want to live our own way. Jesus cries to us "if you only knew what would bring you peace". It was Jesus offering Himself up as our sin-bearer that would reconcile us to God. We can have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

If only we'd realise that Jesus can give us peace with God...
